Front, rear and construction
The front and rear tyres of a motorcycle differ in size and tread pattern, so they are usually bought separately for each wheel. Choose the sizes specified by the motorcycle manufacturer, and ideally use the same tyre model front and rear. Do not mix radial (R, ZR) and bias-ply (“-” or B) tyres on one motorcycle: they behave differently in corners, which can make the bike unpredictable. More in our article on tyre construction.
This category opens with 120/70 R17 – a common front tyre size for road motorcycles with 17-inch wheels; the rear tyre is usually wider, for example 180/55 R17. Copy both sizes from the sidewalls of your current tyres and select them in the “Tyre size” filter. Tyres of every construction in this size are shown here, so check the construction in the product details.
TL, TT and direction of rotation
TL marks tubeless tyres, TT tyres fitted with an inner tube. A tube is needed if the tyre is marked TT or if the rim is not designed for tubeless tyres. The arrow on the sidewall shows the direction of rotation: the tyre is fitted so that the arrow for the front or rear wheel points the way the wheel turns when riding forwards.
Running in and winter
Recommendation: the surface of a new tyre is slippery after manufacture, so ride gently for at least the first 100 km – accelerate and brake smoothly, keep lean angles small and build up gradually. Motorcycles often cover few kilometres, so tyres may age before they wear out; the production date is given by the DOT code (see our article on tyre age).
Legal requirement: under the Road Traffic Rules (point 230), riding a motorcycle on summer tyres is prohibited from December to February, and in the other months whenever at least part of the carriageway being used is covered with snow or ice. Tyres on L-category vehicles must have a tread depth of at least 0.8 mm.
