Speed index and ZR
The speed index – the letter after the load index – shows the maximum speed the tyre is designed for: V – up to 240 km/h, W – up to 270 km/h, Y – up to 300 km/h. The letters ZR in the size (e.g. 225/45 ZR17) mark a radial tyre designed for speeds above 240 km/h, and an index in brackets, such as (Y), means it is also suitable for more than 300 km/h. Choose a speed index no lower than the one in the vehicle documents – the speed category of the tyres is also checked at the technical inspection. The other letters are explained in our article on tyre construction.
Homologation and rim protection
The markings MO, AO, N0 or ★ on the sidewall indicate homologation: the tyre was developed together with a specific car manufacturer and approved by it. If your car left the factory on homologated tyres, it is worth choosing the same marking. Rim protection (FR, FP, MFS or RP in the product details) helps protect large-diameter alloy wheels from kerb scuffs.
Summer tyres and the cold
The compound of sporty summer tyres is designed for warm asphalt: from roughly +7 °C and below it hardens and grip drops noticeably. Some car and tyre manufacturers warn that in severe cold (from about −7 °C) the compound of high-performance summer tyres can even crack, so in such cold it is best not to drive or even move a car on them. For the cold season, see 225/45 R17 winter tyres.
Which size the page opens with
This category opens with 225/45 R17 tyres; both R- and ZR-marked tyres in this size are shown. For some cars the manufacturer specifies different sizes front and rear – the search by vehicle will then show the sizes for both axles. If all four wheels take the same size, select it in the “Tyre size” filter.
