Road, AT or MT tyres
Most crossovers and SUVs are driven on asphalt, so road tyres suit them best: they grip asphalt best, roll more quietly and use less fuel. If you often drive on gravel or forest roads, choose dual-purpose AT (all-terrain) tyres: they are tougher and hold loose surfaces better, but are usually noisier on asphalt. MT (mud-terrain) tyres are made for mud and real off-road driving – on asphalt they are noisier still and grip less well.
Load and speed
An SUV is usually heavier than a saloon or estate of a similar size and often carries a full load or tows a trailer. The load and speed indices must therefore be no lower than those given in the vehicle documents – they are checked at the technical inspection. If the manufacturer specifies reinforced XL tyres, standard ones will not do; more in our article on the load index and XL.
For winter, more than M+S
For SUVs with a gross weight of up to 3.5 t, tyres marked M+S are legally sufficient from 10 November to 31 March, and some AT tyres carry this marking. However, M+S is only a manufacturer's marking with no mandatory test, whereas the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF) shows that the tyre has passed a snow test. If you plan to use off-road tyres in winter as well, choose ones with 3PMSF or a separate set of 215/65 R16 winter tyres; more in our article on the 3PMSF symbol.
