How C tyres differ from car tyres
The letter C after the rim diameter (e.g. 215/65 R16C) marks a commercial vehicle tyre with a reinforced carcass: it carries a heavier load and runs at a higher pressure than a passenger car tyre. Such a tyre has two load indices, for example 109/107: the first applies when each end of the axle carries a single tyre, the second when it carries two (twin wheels). Tyres made for heavy motorhomes are marked CP and are designed for even higher pressure.
If the vehicle documents specify C tyres, choose exactly those: the tyres fitted must match those specified by the manufacturer, and the load index and intended use are checked at the technical inspection. More in our article on load ratings.
Pressure to suit the load
Van manufacturers often give several pressures – for an empty and for a loaded vehicle. Under-inflated tyres on a loaded van wear faster, so adjust the pressure to what you are carrying and measure it with the tyres cold; the pressure table is in the owner's manual.
Winter requirements
Legal requirement: the Road Traffic Rules (point 230) prohibit using motor vehicles on summer tyres from 10 November to 31 March – which includes vans, whatever their weight. For vehicles with a gross weight of up to 3.5 t, tyres during this period must be marked M+S or with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF). The minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm for category M1 (passenger vehicles with up to eight seats in addition to the driver's) and N1 (goods vehicles with a maximum mass of up to 3.5 t) and 2.0 mm for category M2 (more than eight seats plus the driver, maximum mass up to 5 t); from 10 November to 31 March it is 3.0 mm for all three. You will find suitable tyres under winter tyres.
Which size the page opens with
This category opens with 215/65 R16 – a size made both as a C tyre for vans and as an ordinary SUV tyre. Before you order, check whether there is a letter C after the diameter on the sidewall of your current tyre, and compare the load indices. Choose a different size in the “Tyre size” filter.
